The success the Notte Bianca has enjoyed in Paris ever since its first edition in 2002, has led many European capitals and large cities to organise their own Notte Bianca based on the Parisian model. Wishing to share their experience in organising this event, and also to experience reciprocally enriching artistic exchanges, since 2006 these capital cities have decided to join forces, with the objective of completing successfully a shared artistic project entitled “European Notti Bianche”. Operation “European Notti Bianche” also provides a privileged network of cooperation between the events organised in the various European capitals and hopes to extend to others too.
In 2006, five capital cities (Paris, Rome, Riga, Brussels and Madrid) have enjoyed an exchange of artists, each welcoming an artist or theatrical company coming from one of the capitals belonging to the European Notti Bianche network. In 2007, six capital cities (Paris, Rome, Riga, Brussels, Madrid and Bucharest) decided to formulate a shared artistic project consisting in the creation of a “lounge” area in the heart of each Notte Bianca. Since 2007 the city of Bucharest has joined the “European Notti Bianche” organising its first Notte Bianca for September 22nd. White Nights Europe Charter
The cities of Brussels, Madrid, Paris, Riga and Rome have decided to share the respect of the following rules:
• The Notte Bianca is a cultural event, open to all with no admission charge, held each year between the end of the summer and the beginning of autumn and lasting one whole night. • The Notte Bianca privileges contemporary creativeness in all its forms; plastic arts, screenings, music, theatre, circus and innovative performances. • The Notte Bianca presents public areas in all their aspects such as locations that are usually closed or abandoned, suburban areas as well as prestigious locations that are part of the city’s historical legacy, revisited by the artists in an original manner. • The Notte Bianca allows the organising cities to reflect together on the current evolution of metropolitan nights and to provide adequate services and organisational models. • The Notte Bianca is an opportunity for promoting “low-polluting” forms of mobility: bicycles, trams and pubic transport in general, river boats. • Notte Bianca encourages inter-exchange between suburban areas and the city centre. • The cities that are partners in the “European Notti Bianche” have decided to organise each year a common artistic project with the objective of promoting an inter-exchange of experiences at a European level. | |
