Ecumenical prayer for the redemption of Emilio Isgrò’s art and culture

Emilio Isgrò, a visual poet, an author and an artist born in Sicily, has lived and worked in Milan since 1956, the year in which he published for Arturo Schwarz a book of poetry entitled "Fiere del Sud" [Beasts of the South]. In 1964 he started to work on "Cancellature" [erasing], a conceptual book in which he provocatively uses subtraction, erasing words both so as to protest against their authoritativeness and so as to create new and more realistic forms of expression. At the 2007 edition of the Notte Bianca, Emilio Isgrò re-presents "The ecumenical prayer for the redemption of art and culture" previously presented at the Venice Biennial in 1993 by Achille Bonito Oliva and also at the Casale Marittimo Festival in 2006. Music for this performance is composed by Francesca Breschi and recited by a chapel choir set around the artist’s work entitled "The Tables of the Law or the glass Bible" (1994), which will be presented to the National Gallery of Modern Art.

Notte nera [Black Night]

“In his conversations with Osvaldo Ferrari, Jorge Luis Borgès speaks of a chiaroscuro in etymology: if the words black and blanco are so closely linked, it is because originally black did not mean the colour black, but rather the absence of colour. So, in the English language what happened was that the absence of colour led the word black towards the meaning of shadows, of blackness. While in the Romance languages the same word has always been projected towards the light, towards, lightness, generating the words in Italian, in French and in Portuguese”.

This modern "machine of space and time" brings the sky to everyone, condensing the centuries and light years above our heads for the benefit of the public. A perfect reproduction of the constellations shines underneath the 14 metre wide dome, showing the movements of the sun, the moon and the planets against a backdrop of the Zodiac, the Milky Way and more than 4500 stars. Three digital projectors make it possible to navigate deep space in three dimensions and real time. It is now finally possible to touch the sky with your fingers: thanks to spectacular simulations and all-sky projections, celestial bodies, nebulae and galaxies can all be held in the hand. The planetarium of Rome offers a wide program of live astronomical shows, lectures, events and observations of the sky for all audiences, allowing everyone to approach the wonders of the heavens and unveil their secrets, in a fascinating mix of emotion, technology and rigorous science. The nearby Astronomical Museum takes visitors on a journey from Earth to the universe, through the grand themes of space, time and the origin of the elements. It offers an interactive experience, involving giant models of the planets, dioramas and interactive multimedia stations with astronomical videogames. The planetarium of Rome has returned to open a window onto the sky: an astronomical theatre to rediscover the natural show of a starry night, a chance to jump into the depths of space and explore the cosmos that surrounds us.

In 1927 Giuseppe Primoli, the son of Count Pietro Primoli and Princess Carlotta Bonaparte, gave to the city of Rome his collection of works of art, Napoleonic memorabilia and family heirlooms, together with the rooms of the ground floor of his palace, in which the collection is still displayed. His wish was not so much to display the imperial grandeur of the Bonaparte family as to recount their private history and celebrate the close relationship between the Bonapartes and the city of Rome.
The collection covers three distinct historical moments:
- the actual Napoleonic period, represented by huge canvases and busts by the major artists of the time, portraying several members of the imperial family in stately, conventional poses;
- the so-called "Roman" period, from the fall of Napoleon to the rise of Napoleon III;
- the period of the second empire, represented by paintings, sculptures, engravings, furniture and objects d'art, all from that period of French history in which Napoleon III was in the ascendant.

The museum's permanent exhibition focuses on the main aspects of everyday Roman life in the late eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, filtered through the tastes and convictions of the artists and folklorists who described it. Major themes are costume, folk dancing, festivals, both religious and secular, and crafts. The collection includes paintings, prints, drawings and watercolours, among them the famous series of "Vanished Rome" by Ettore Roesler Franz (Rome 1845 - 1907), a crib incorporating scenes of daily Roman life in the nineteenth century, and six life-size representations of day to day life in the period, known as "Roman Scenes". The museum also contains some of the personal possessions of the great poet Trilussa (Rome 1871 - 1950), which were donated to the Municipality of Rome after his death and are in part exhibited in the video installation space called after him.

This small but richly furnished museum, in the heart of Villa Borghese, is notable for its fin di siecle ambience. It is dedicated to the artist Pietro Canonica (1869 -1959). The museum offers its visitors a number of different perspectives on the artist's world. The private apartments on the first floor, with their precious furnishings and collection of nineteenth century Piedmontese paintings, give an insight into Canonica's personal memories and affections. His studio on the ground floor is evidence of his great technical skill and, even now, a source of inspiration. In the exhibition halls many of his works are displayed, everything from small busts to large equestrian statues, as well as sculptures, sketches, models and casts. The collection charts the turbulent period of history from the end of the nineteenth until the middle of the twentieth century, and gives an overview of the different styles and production techniques used in sculpture during that time.

The park of the Villa Torlonia contains two museums: the Casino Nobile and the Casina delle Civette (House of the Owls). The Casino Nobile holds, on its two display floors, the Museo della Villa, with period sculpture and furnishings. In the Casino dei Principi, an annex of the Casino Nobile, the Archive of the Scuola Romana, with its rich collection of documents can be consulted. It also periodically hosts temporary exhibitions.
The Casina delle Civette is outstanding in its originality.Its name comes from the recurrent use of owls as an inspiration for the decorative scheme. The numerous multicoloured windows were made, for the most part, by Cesare Picchiarini between 1910 and 1925, from designs by Duilio Cambellotti, Umberto Bottazzi, Vittorio Grassi and Paolo Paschetto.The building was opened to the public as a museum space in 1997; the original collection has been enriched with other pieces of stained glass by the same craftsmen and with drawings, sketches and preparatory cartoons

Biennale FreeArte 2007

"In the legendary Il Canovaccio-Studio Antonio Canova art gallery, the FreeArte Biennial at its first edition is an exhibition dedicated to the different techniques and trends of the many artists present. The FreeArte Biennial is addressed at providing a broad, organic review, the need for a psychological space in which one define one’s own identity, reason-conscience-universe. Art gives us all a precious moment, useful for opening the gates to personal and collective progress. Universal thought is precisely the most private that albeit within its specificity, expresses life’s universal dimension, a shared condition. The world exists in the meaning and the direction of history; humankind is obliged to take part in the possibility of human coexistence. The world’s solution is universal; its conscience arises from an everlasting feeling of human beings’ fundamental equality”. (Livio Garbuglia)

A spell on the water, magical bells

Bells, a simple and ancient musical instrument, shared by all religious and lay communities in the world, are the sound preferred by the great Spanish composer and performer Llorenç Barber. Bells of every shape and size fluctuate suspended over the water and become sound architecture, the metals’ echo creates a concert of single notes that establish an intimate relationship with the natural elements ad create a ‘soundscape’ filled with emotions. In the silence of the night the magic tolling of a thousand bells transforms our perception of space, of sound and of time to immerse us in a poetic dimension of distant memories.

All the colours of the night

The night with its colours filled with anxiety, expectations and hope, an emotive itinerary moving amidst poetic texts, monologues and music. The places of remembrance are those of love, of madness, of diversity. Dino Buzzati’s “Inviti superflui” consists in a long dialogue filled with non-communication between a man and a woman. The pain of a window closed when faced with love, the haunting notes of a “piano played in the night”, regrets for choices with no return. The guests of a prison wait in vain for a Godot capable of understanding, a human condition reaching well beyond the world of prisons. However...the sky becomes increasingly bluer!
